This took a lot of nerve, but I finally made it to Pumping Station 1, a hacker space for everything you can think of. They have a full woodworking shop and this was the first time I’ve been there since my authorization. The plan was to buy the 2×2’s for the bed frame and work on the toilet box. I went to Home Depot to return some items and got a store credit for one of them, which was more than I expected. What a nice surprise! I found the 2×2 stock, which was not that great. You really have to sift through them to find good pieces. I found 5 good ones, but need to go back for one more. I also bought water-based polyurethane for the toilet box, wood glue and a Kreg single-space pocket hole jig and some 1 1/4″ screws.
I met Paul, one of the authorizers at the shop and he and I were the only ones there for most of the afternoon. The shop just bought a new miter saw and I was able to go through my cut list until I ran out of wood. I played with the jig, but didn’t have much luck because I bought the wrong size screws. I will get the right size and try again today. I also have to figure out how to place the clamps to work with small pieces. Not an issue, but good to know. I also need to get 2 1/2″ screws for the 2×2’s. I don’t know what I was thinking about the smaller ones. They did not work at all so I’ll have to return them.
After cleaning up my space I put everything away and moved on to the toilet project. The bottom and top piece where the hole is were double coated with polyurethane. They could probably use more, but I think they will be OK with just 2 coats. Let me know if you think there should be more.
Today, I plan to go back to Home Depot to get the rest of the items and will work on stabilizing the wheel well covers and attach them to the floor. Then I’ll finish cutting the 2×2’s and start assembling the bed frame. Finally, I will assemble the toilet box and stabilize that too. Still need to find the urine diverter and then I can move on to the next project…Just need to remember to eat well before I go and bring plenty of water. After an afternoon’s work, I was starving by the time I got home!
